Vintage Planters; McCoy, Frankoma, and more

Do you think the little neti pot I turned into a planter would win any awards? Probably not and the fact the little cactus didn’t make it more than a couple months goes to show you I don’t have a green thumb.

Buuuut, just because I don’t have a green thumb doesn’t mean, I don’t like plants in my home. The best plant I have ever owned is a Pothos. I’ve had it for 10 years or so and it just keeps on going.

I also love this wooden plant holder. I actually found another one of a different size a couple months later and I’m sure I’ll sell them eventually because, that’s just what I do. This Pothos will make many appearances because I’m that attached to it.

Back to planters though…the pottery companies I’ve heard of most are Roseville, Rookwood, McCoy, Frankoma and Weller. The pottery I find most often locally are Haegar and Hull. I definitely grew up with the standard brown Hull dishes and I acquired a couple casserole dishes that we use weekly.

Then, of course, there’s always the unmarked pottery pieces. The companies I mentioned though, all made their fair share of gorgeous planters and more.

Let’s see what I have in store…

This little green Hull planter made an appearance in my Green Glassware and Pottery post. It’s still available too.

Yellow Vintage Pottery Car

I picked up this little yellow car planter at an auction and the 1st thing the auctioneer said was, “Oh, we have a little Ford Model T Morton Pottery planter here.” The only thing is, I can’t find anything to corroborate his Morton Pottery claims. Hmmmm.

Morton is a town in Illinois that did, indeed, have a lot of pottery operations from the late 1800s through the 1970s. Too bad I can’t seem to find out anymore details. The Ford Model T, I can believe but, I’m no car expert.

Measurements are approximates only:

  • 6 1/2” long front to back
  • 3” wide side to side
  • Weighs 1lb. .6 oz.

IMPERFECTIONS:

  • Due to age, use, and/or storage it is dirty and will need to be more thoroughly cleaned.
  • Staining that might be permanent on the bottom.

I love the look of Frankoma Pottery. It has such a soothing, natural look to them. The colors are almost always muted and neutral. This one could be a bowl to hold fruits or a gorgeous planter.

  • It has the look of large gravy boat.
  • The colors are soft browns, yellows, and creams.
  • No chips or cracks.
  • The coloration on the inside of the bowl is not believed to be staining but, the colors of the clay.

  • 11 1/2″ long
  • 7″ wide
  • 3 1/2″ tall
  • Weighs 1 lb. 11 oz.
